The Monkey wrench was invented in 1840 by Loring Coes, a knife manufacturer in Worcester. The monkey wrench was created as a refinement of the 18th century English coach wrenches to accommodate the odd size of the English nuts that were being imported for wagon wheels.

Worcester is located almost near the geographical center of Massachusetts and it has been known as the “Heart of the Commonwealth” for over 200 years. Sidenote: Worcester resident, Esther Howland, was the first to make valentines cards in the early 1840’s. She then partnered with Jotham Taft and his wife of Grafton in 1879 to form the New England Valentine Company.

Originally called "New Common", the initial 27 acres of Elm Park were purchased in 1854, making Worcester one of the first cities in the United States to use public funds to purchase land for use as a public park. It is a historic park that was established by a progressive City looking to preserve open space for the enjoyment of its citizens.

Dr. Robert H. Goddard was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 5, 1882 and is known as the father of modern rocket jet propulsion. In fact, on March 16, 1926 in Auburn, MA Dr. Goddard constructed and completed a successful test of the first rocket using liquid fuel. As NASA states, it “…was as significant to history as that of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk.”

The recognizable smiley face was first created in 1963 in Worcester, Massachusetts by graphic artist Harvey Ball. Ball was assigned the duty to create a graphic to raise morale among the employees of The State Mutual Life Insurance Company after many company mergers. It took Ball less than 10 minutes and was paid $45 dollars for his work.

The lion is representative as the Worcester Bravehearts mascot. Did you know where the Worcester Bravehearts get their name? The name “Bravehearts” was chosen out of a list of more than 1,000 names submitted by the public. It stands for in honor of Worcester’s BRAVE men and women in uniform serving locally and abroad, as well as a tribute to Worcester’s fallen firefighters. And signifies Worcester as the HEART of the Commonwealth from its nickname.
